RUMOR: WB Eyeing ‘Life’s Daniel Espinosa To Direct ‘Akira’

Mar 24, 2017

Warner Bros. has been attempting their live-action adaptation of the beloved manga/anime Akira since 2002 and has seen five directors come-and-go up until now.

Jeff from Meet The Movie Press has an update since Jaume Collet-Serra has left and the studio has been looking at new directors to come aboard. He states that Life director Daniel Espinosa and Lights Out director David Sandberg has been linked to talks.

Sandberg has been preoccupied with other upcoming Warner Bros. projects and seems like he might be out of the running. While Espinosa has been circling franchise gigs for years.

Akira caught a lot of heat for its massive whitewashing attempt to move the setting to Manhattan and cast a majority white cast. Let’s see if Warner Bros. has learned from Ghost In The Shell and give us an Asian-led movie.
