Russo Brothers Open To Directing A ‘Star Wars’ Film In The Future

May 8, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War is putting up Star Wars level box office along with the amount of characters and scale. So, it’s not too shocking that the Russo Brothers are being asked on the HappySadConfused podcast if they have a desire to tackle the franchise.

Here’s what Joe Russo had to say.

“I think we’ve just been part of the Marvel universe. And I think they’re very respectful of Kevin and the Marvel universe. You know, when we’re done telling stories in Marvel, then is there the opportunity to maybe go tell some other stories? We’ve not hidden the fact that Star Wars was a seminal experience like it was for everyone else. And that when The Empire Strikes Back came out, I sat in a theater from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and I watched it back-to-back-to-back. So I think we appreciate that universe as much as anyone. The question would be, ‘Can we find a story to tell in it? And what is it?'”

It’s not terribly strange as we’ve seen actors crossover between the massive Disney franchises. However, Joe gives the impression that they still have work to do at Marvel.

Two interesting future options could be a Thrawn (now part of canon via Rebels) or Sith Empire (Legacy/Old Republic) anthology film. Mainly, I suggest these ideas because of they were able to bring a villain like Thanos to the big screen (had been compared to Vader).

There’s also the films that the Game of Thrones showrunners which are developing for Lucasfilm may or may not be set in The Old Republic. It’s unlikely they will directing as they’re producers and writers.

If the studio wants to pursue more main Episodes after Episode IX, they could be good candidates as well.

Nothing suggests they will end up making a Star Wars film but it’s hard to ignore they could do something entertaining in that universe.
