Scott Derrickson Wants Nightmare As ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Villain; Cast Iwan Rheon!

Oct 29, 2016

Doctor Strange director and co-writer Scott Derrickson has been teasing about the villains of the sequel and has finally dropped a name.

While speaking with IGN, Scott revealed he’d love to include the villain Nightmare ruler of the nightmare realm in Doctor Strange 2.

“I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension. […] That’s early – that’s like the first Strange tale. I think that’s in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that.”

“We decided not to do that because that’s a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that’s super cool concept.”

Here’s a little information on the villain.

screen-shot-2016-10-29-at-11-55-24-amHe is the evil ruler of a “Dream Dimension”, where tormented humans are brought during their sleep. He roams this realm on his demonic black horned horse named Dreamstalker. He appears as a chalk-white man with wild green hair, a green bodysuit, and a ragged cape. He was the first foe met by Doctor Strange, when a man who was having troubled dreams went to Strange for help, though it is revealed this is due to him committing a murder. Later Nightmare imprisons several humans in his dimension, but Strange frees them. When Doctor Strange forgot to recite a spell before he slept, Nightmare started tormenting him, before Strange was freed after tricking Nightmare by casting an illusion of an enemy of his.

Derrickson told Den of Geek he wants to invoke the Dark Knight/Joker comparison for the sequel’s villain. They might as well get another strong actor known for playing villains like they did with Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen.

“What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.”

There’s an actor we’d think would be perfect for the role.

We’re championing the casting Welsh actor Iwan Rheon, best known as playing the villain Ramsey Bolton on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Ramsey was menacing and dark as it gets, which could make for an interesting take for a Marvel.

I think there are plenty of other actors that could pull-off the role, including Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One, Bloodline, The Dark Knight Rises), Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter, Skyfall, Hurt Locker) and Norman Reedus (Walking Dead, Triple 9, Blade 2).

Marvel Studios has slatted three untitled films for release in 2020 and we’ve assumed that Doctor Strange 2 could be the film set for November 6th, 2020.
