For a comic with the word “secrets” in the title, Issue Number 2 of Seven Secrets reveals much about the characters from the first issue. It isn’t very often that you get glimpses into the inner sanctum of the types of organizations the Keeper and Holders are part of. We still don’t know what is contained in the various briefcases. However, Tom Taylor gives us much development in terms of the characters who are responsible for their protection.
This issue provides flashbacks to the moments and years after the painful choice Eva and Sigurd were forced to make. Tajana, both stern yet supportive is quickly becoming a favorite for me in this series. Taylor writes this character with such attitude and authority. I clearly see why she is in charge of so much in terms of The Order. Rather than entrust the safety of young Capser to anyone she wisely puts him in the protection of the Keeper and Holder of the 3rd secret. Much of this issue focuses on Casper and his growth. Despite the circumstances surrounding his conception, Casper is written as well adjusted and happy.
Issue # 1 led us to believe Casper was unaware of his affiliation with The Order. In this issue we learn he was trained by them. We also learn he was aware of his parents. This issue sees the emotional impact of this decision and how it weighs on Casper, Eva and Sigurd. The trial and delivery room scene from last issue were emotionally painful scenes. Seeing Casper interact with his parents is even more painful to witness. . Danielle Di Nicuolo and colorists Walter Balamonte and Katia Ranalli do such an amazing job bringing each moment between these characters to life.
The Order is responsible for protecting a bunch of secrets. Issue # 2 makes one secret very apparent for Casper and the reader. Family matters.
