Shutterstock Reinvents Stock Library With New Generative AI Image Editing Tools

Shutterstock has unveiled a set of generative AI-powered editing tools that allow users to customize and refine over 700 million images in its stock library. These tools, developed in partnership with OpenAI, offer extensive image modification options that are unprecedented in the stock photo marketplace. The six features include AI Image Generator, Variations, Magic Brush, Background Remover, Expand Image, and Smart Resize.

AI Customized Stock Library

Shutterstock’s new editing tools are the first of their kind in the stock photography industry. The AI Image Generator, powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 text-to-image model, allows users to create new content. The Variations feature provides multiple options based on a stock photo or AI-generated image. The Magic Brush tool enables users to modify specific areas of an image using a text description. The Background Remover allows users to replace the background while keeping people or objects in place. Lastly, the Expand Image and Smart Resize features use generative AI to alter the perspective and dimensions of an image.

Shutterstock CEO Paul Hennessy stated that this offering provides infinite possibilities for creatives to craft the perfect content for any project. The company will compensate artists if their uploaded images are licensed after AI editing. However, edited or AI-generated content will not be accepted as new submissions to protect contributor intellectual property. Additionally, Shutterstock has included an indemnification clause in its license to protect enterprise customers using its generative AI tools to create synthetic media.

Shutterstock plans to add more capabilities in the future as AI technology advances. The ultimate goal is to allow users to customize stock images as if they were directing a photoshoot themselves. This new offering aligns with Shutterstock’s mission to bridge the gap between photographers and creative professionals by providing a customizable stock library.
