Sigourney Weaver Reaffirms James Cameron Likes Blomkamp’s ‘Alien 5’ Idea/Concept – Hopes To Pivot Back One Day

Oct 29, 2018

THR spoke with Sigourney Weaver about Avatar and Alien franchises.

She reveals that filming (performance capture) on Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 has completed as they begin to move on to Avatar 4-5.

Sigourney goes on to rekindle the potential of returning to make Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 as she reaffirms that James Cameron likes the idea of the project. However, is realistic that she and Neill are extremely busy at the moment and wouldn’t happen anytime soon.

“We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”

Well, we have previous confirmation that Jim liked the script when he said it publicly at the Aliens anniversary panel not too long ago at San Diego Comic-Con. Cameron also seemingly recycled Neill’s crux of Alien 5 for his new Terminator movie, both projects would be sequels to the second film only to retcon a bunch of the sequels.

I’ll be interesting to see how Blomkamp feels after returning to Alien 5 after knocking out Greenland and RoboCop Returns. Also, Disney’s Alan Horn might want to invest in Alien 5 over a sequel to Alien Covenant, considering we haven’t seen Ripley (the face of the franchise) for over twenty years. Projects like The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Halloween and the upcoming Terminator have been banking on these soft-reboots which for the most part have been successful.
