Sony Consider These Actresses For ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff ‘Silver and Black’

Aug 17, 2017

Spider-Man spinoff Silver and Black was recently given the release date of February 8th, 2019. The Sony film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood will focus female Marvel characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.

Its next step will be casting the two main leads.

Rumored details for the film by SplashReport state Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) will be hiding out in the Triple Frontier which gives the impression she’ll need to speak Spanish (and Portuguese) to not draw attention but being played by a Latina might be even better.

Silver Sable is hired by the government to find Felicia Hardy. The Black Cat, a master hacker, and thief has apparently stolen valuable secret information. She’s hiding in the lawless and dangerous triple frontier area between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil.

Two of the film’s potential villains are rumored via SplashReport to be Latino with Michael Mando’s Scorpion and Tarantula (Anton Miguel Rodriquez). It seems extremely odd that we’ll only see Latinos portray villains considering the film’s potential South American setting.

We have some suggestions for actresses which should not be confused with sourced intel.

Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon, Annihilation) just might be a strong candidate to take on the Felicia Hardy role. The actress follows and is followed by director Gina Prince-Bythewood on Instagram.

Sony Pictures is already working with Gina on two film projects that include the animated nativity film The Star and Catherine Hardwicke’s Miss Bala remake placing Gina in a more action-focused role.

In Miss Bala, Rodriguez stars Gloria Meyer who, after her friend Suzu goes missing in Tijuana, finds herself a pawn in a dangerous game being played by the CIA, the DEA, and a charismatic young crime boss.

The Miss Bala role sounds like a good primer for making a jump to an action franchise along with Alex Garland’s Annihilation for Paramount.

One of her animated projects Smallfoot will co-star Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Zendeya.

Other comic book actors she’s worked with include such as Oscar Issac (X-Men: Apocalypse), Natalie Portman (Thor), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), Kurt Russell (Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2), Channing Tatum (Gambit), David Tennant (Jessica Jones), Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man), Kris Kristofferson (Blade), and Zachary Levi (Thor 2).

She is following Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Night Of, Nightcrawler) on Twitter and Instagram, who in talks for a role in Venom that is rumored to cross over in Silver and Black. It doesn’t mean too much but interesting none-the-less.

Gina had been linked to the Rose role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi this gives the impression she’s willing to tackle a franchise role. Rodriguez is open to superhero roles too, as she mentioned a desire to play Marvel her America Chavez aka Miss America and fans have hinted they’d like to see her play Jessica Cruz in Green Lantern Corps.

She has called out both Marvel and DC for not enough representation of Latinos in their superhero hero films. Leading some to suggest Gina take on a superhero role.

However, another big Sony project is the Elizabeth Banks directed Charlie’s Angels remake which could be another good fit for Gina. This could conflict with taking a role in Silver and Black.

Another potential Sony pick could end up being Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez, who had a bit of a breakout in this summer’s Baby Driver. One of the few success stories for Sony. Although, not as well known as Rodriguez.

Eiza will also have roles in the Robert Rodriguez anime adaptation Alita: Battle Angel co-starring with Homecoming’s Jennifer Connelly and begins shooting the next Robert Zemeckis film in Vancouver very soon.

Her schedule looks clear for next year.

Silver Sablinova aka Silver Sable in the comics has a Russian background but who knows if they’ll attempt to keep that aspect of her origin intact. If I had to take a guess who would make a good candidate it would be Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, Stronger).

Maslany has an Eastern European background and happens to speak French, German, and some Spanish. Having multiple languages in her back pocket and playing numerous characters in Orphan Black gives her plenty of tools to play a spy/mercenary like Sable.

Tatiana has lost out on plenty of franchise roles which includes The Last Jedi (Rose), Rogue One (Jyn Erso), and Terminator: Genesys (Sarah Connor), so she’s game for a large role like this.

Orphan Black’s final season will be wrapping up the series on giving Tatiana a window to join Silver and Black.

Who would you want to see in these roles?
