Krypto the Superdog is finally back to grace our screens but this time in theaters! Krypto the Superdog, which first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 (1955) has always been Supermans most iconic best friend. As some might know; Krypto has had his own animated series in the 2000s; and appeared in other media such as Smallville and TITANS. Now, Krypto is returning in his first feature length animated film starring the voices of Dwayne Johnson as the titular character, and Kevin Hart as the voice of Ace the Bat-Hound in DC League of Super-Pets!
Details have been pretty scarce on the animated feature; but sources at TheGWW have recently learned the plot of the film. Spoilers below.
THE PLOT
“It sure isn’t easy being Superman’s dog! Krypto hails from Krypton and has super-powers like his owner; but his social skills are decidedly alien at the dog park – and he has no idea how to be…ordinary. But when Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped; while Krypto is exposed to green kryptonite as a motley crew of shelter pets is exposed to orange kryptonite. Krypto is stripped of his abilities while the other animals become all-powerful.
Krypto must learn to be less alien; and more “human” to teach a dog, a pig, a squirrel, and a turtle how to harness their new powers, work together, and become the superheroes they were destined to be. But can they defeat a twisted guinea pig named Lulu and save the Justice League and Metropolis from destruction? And will a bunch of strays find homes with the most famous superheroes on earth?”
Conclusion
Details are pretty interesting to me, as it seems it is going into an entirely new direction for the characters making it its own thing. I have some theories on who the pig, squirrel, and turtle could be based off the plot information. The pig could be Gryll; Circes pet pig who is not a very well known character. But they made their first appearance in the DC Super-Pets encyclopedia from 2013. The squirrel could possibly be a new take on Ch’p or be inspired by them. Ch’p is a extraterrestrial Lantern that resembles a squirrel or a chipmunks. In comic lore he’s typically a native of the planet H’Iven. I believe the turtle is very likely to be Terrific Whatzit who was DCs first ever talking animal superhero! Terrific has similar powers to The Flash such as super speed and wears a costume similar to Jay Garricks.
Orange kryptonite as well? That debuted in a tie-in comic based on Krypto the Superdog animated series. Interesting to me they’ve looked at the animated series for influence.
DC League of Super-Pets is being directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, and features a screenplay by Stern. While being produced by Patricia Hicks, Stern, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and Nicholas Stoller are executive producing.
