Even though Spider-Man is firmly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a few more years, his cavalcade of supporting characters are not. Films like ‘Venom,’ ‘Morbius, and ‘Venom 2’ exist in its own pocket Spider-Verse, not in the MCU, under Sony’s control. Now a new film is being planned, and written by someone who has ties to the property: Roberto Orci.
The Wrap reports that Orci is writing a film based on an as-of-yet unknown Marvel character for Sony. Moreover, Orci’s film might not be directly related to ‘Venom’ and ‘Morbius,’ but will come from a lesser known corner of the Marvel catalog that Sony has access to.
The last crack at a Spider-Verse film for Orci was the critically panned ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ He is also responsible for the first two ‘Transformers’ films. On the other side of that coin, Orci also has written crowd pleasers such as 2009’s ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 3.’ He is also all over television too, having developed or written a handful of series like ‘Fringe,’ ‘Alias,’ ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ and ‘Sleepy Hollow.’
Orci has written a lot of big properties. Some have resonated, and some have not. Maybe this will be a chance to make up for the abysmal ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ though that disaster wasn’t 100% his fault. Still, it feels like an uninspired choice to go back to a familiar pool, when there are so many more interesting voices out there waiting for there shot at a big time superhero property.
Meanwhile, there were also plans for a movie focusing on Black Cat and Silver Sable, but that was axed in favor of two seperate solo films for the characters. A film centered on Madame Web is also in the works, from ‘Morbius’ writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Other characters rumored to be getting solo films, at least at one point in time, include Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Nightwatch, Silk, Jackpot, and Spider-Woman.
‘Morbius,’ which comes out July 31st, will be the next entry in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.
