Stargirl
DC Universe/CW
Season 1, Episode 4 ‘Wildcat’
Stargirl has been a great breath of fresh air for the DC shows overall. Each episode so far has been stellar at world building on their own pace. In episode 4 we get introduced to the newest member of the Justice Society of America, Wildcat.
After Courtney was shown the former headquarters of the JSA she made it a point to rebuild the team. A chance encounter with Yolanda Montez, Court set her sights on getting her first recruit. Yolanda might sound familiar if you are acquainted with the Infinite Crisis comics as she takes over the mantle of Wildcat from Ted Grant during that classic run.
Stargirl has been taking the extra, necessary steps to address current issues that many high school students deal with daily. This episode we see the dangers of sending intimate pictures to significant others. This is something that many students deal with and we are shown the effects it has not only on at school, but also at home.
The series so far has kept away from the villain of the week trope that many of the DC shows have used. Instead we get a world building story arc with a focus on seeing the characters grow into their full potential. We see that Court and Yolanda bond over their new abilities and learn how deep the Injustice Society seed has spread in their town.
‘Wildcat’ is a strong episode. It introduces new sinister elements to the Injustice Society and builds upon the bond between friends and teammates. With the real world elements it adds more depth to the characters that makes the series stand out from other shows.
