Another classic Stephen King tale is heading back to the big screen with a remake and the studio has already announced a director.
The original Firestarter was released in 1984 starring Drew Barrymore, David Keith and George C. Scott. It was directed by Mark Lester (Commando). The film, about a father and daughter on the run from government agents intent on exploiting their unique abilities, is based on the novel of the same name from Stephen King. Jason Blum of Blumhouse films (Paranormal Activity, Get Out, Split) announced that he was teaming with Universal Pictures to bring a new version of the story to the big screen. This version will be directed by Akiva Goldsman.
Goldsman’s resume as a director is not long, having directed a few episodes of Fringe and 2014’s romance film Winter’s Tale most notably, but his credits as a writer are significantly longer. He recently wrote the screenplay for another Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower. He has written the screenplays for I, Robot, I am Legend and Rings. He won an Academy Award in 2002 for his script for the Ron Howard film A Beautiful Mind.
