While we had hopped to get some intel on the upcoming Flash movie it looks like the reason we have been waiting for so long has come to light.
Variety reports that because of script rewrites and possibly due Ezra Miller’s commitments to Fantastic Beasts 3, the studio has decided to push the production of The Flash to late 2019 and giving the film an undisclosed release date in 2021.
Warner Bros. is pushing back the start of filming on the studio’s still untitled standalone Flash film, sources tell Variety. The film never received a formal greenlight nor did it have a set release date, but it had been expected to begin shooting in March. However, a script is still being tweaked and the studio thinks that it won’t have enough time to get the script in shape in order for the film to make its original start date.
That’s a problem, because Ezra Miller, the live-wire performer tasked with playing the Flash, also has a key supporting role in “Fantastic Beasts,” the “Harry Potter” spin-off series. The third film in the franchise begins shooting in July, which would cause scheduling headaches. The standalone Flash film is now expected to commence production in late 2019. That likely means the superhero adventure won’t debut in theaters until some time in 2021.
This isn’t the worst news imaginable as this extra time gives the studio more time to get the script and production design where they need it to be, along with plenty of time for the casting process.
Rushing DC projects has been part of the problem with how the studio has been handling these movies and little extra time never hurts.
Plus, Birds of Prey and The Batman are likely going to be the 2020 films the studio plans to releasing. Adding a third might be a little too much.
New production dates have yet to be revealed but a start in September/December is expected.
Warner Bros. has yet give the film an official release date.
