‘The Whale Rider’ Director Niki Caro Boards Disney’s ‘Mulan’

Feb 16, 2017

Today, Variety is reporting that The Whale Rider director Niki Caro will direct Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan. No star has been cast yet but an open casting call did go out late last year. Disney was first interested in Niki Caro for the directing gig for Marvel Studios upcoming Captain Marvel feature film starring Brie Larson. However, the director has since boarded Mulan disqualifying herself from the Captain Marvel job. Other female directors like Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins and Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren were also considered for the job.

This will be yet another live-action adaptions of a classic Disney story after 2014’s Maleficent, 2015’s Cinderella, 2016’s The Jungle Book and their years Beauty and the Beast. An Aladdin live-action film is also in the works with director Guy Ritchie attached.

Disney’s Mulan hits November 2nd, 2018
