After an exciting, action-filled debut, Graveyard Shift #2, slows it down a bit to let the characters and readers catch their breath. Now that Liam’s girlfriend is a vampire what’s a boyfriend to do? Especially when she’s hankering for some of the red stuff.
Jay Faerber and Fran Bueno have put their own spin on the vampire genre. And it’s really grounded so far. I mean what would do if a loved one became a vampire? Seems like a simple idea but takes commitment to the little things like avoiding sunlight, holy crosses and avoid chomping on your doting lover’s neck. It’s a rather complicated relationship. Considering the losses of his fellow policemen it’s no wonder he’s holding on dearly to this relationship.
Yet there still lurks a band of vampires that are hunting them down. We don’t know a lot of about them but the theory is that it involves the suspect he chased days earlier. Now his partners are dead and his girlfriend craves blood. There’s still a lot of unanswered questions. Faerber has set up the mystery perfectly going into issue three. It’s refreshing not to be able to predict where the story is going.
Bueno continues to shine throughout the book. The transitions from dusk to dawn are gorgeous as he captures the shadows and light as in real life. A classic car looks as cherry and striking as the day it rolled off the assembly line. Bueno does excellent work throughout but it’s evident that he’s just waiting to break out with the horror as those pages hum with the intensity it deserves. Primal, desperate, blood-thirsty and gruesome are ways to explain the execution Bueno displays when vampires attack. It’s what gives the book its thrills and chills.
Expect more of it next month. Now would be a good time to jump on this title.
