Adam Wingard is set to be the director of upcoming “Thundercats” film for Warner Bros. This much anticipated film has been in the works for over a decade and now has its man at the helm. Wingard’s newest film Godzilla vs. Kong broke post plague outbreak box office records in the oversease market. Deadline announced that Wingard would be taking on the film and taking it in a direction he had “been thinking about for many years.”
“Thundercats” is an animated TV show that ran between 1985-89 and the brainchild of Rankin Bass in which humanoid cats must flee their home world of Thundera before it dies. Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, and many more must make a new life on Third Earth.
This mix of sci-fi and sorcery should lend itself to the vision that Wingard has in mind. It will be a “hybrid of CGI and animation” to keep away from the pesky Cats incident. Producers Dan Lin (Rideback’s) and Roy Lee (Vertigo) have worked with Wingard before on Death Note. Following a story developed early by David Coggeshall and being rewritten by Wingard and Simon Barrett.
