Warner Brothers has started production on the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise.
The film, currently titled simply Tomb Raider, will begin filming in January 2017. Locations confirmed include South Africa and the UK. No additional locations have been confirmed yet.
The film is an origin story for the character and will focus on her first adventure. While many of the plot details are still unknown, it will touch on Lara Croft clearing the disgraced name of her father through his research into an ancient secret. The script is written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet whose has been tapped to write the scripts for Sherlock Holmes 3, M.A.S.K: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand and Gotham City Sirens.
Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) is cast as the lead Lara Croft.
Walton Goggins (Vice Principals, The Hateful Eight) has been tapped to play the villain.
The film is directed by Roar Uthaug, whose previous film was the critically acclaimed The Wave in 2015.
Tomb Raider is set for release March 16, 2018.
