All of us the Geekverse (Geeksphere?) have been clamoring over any news from our current stable of tent pole films and TV shows. We wait patiently for any news about our favorite franchises and salivate around set pics and speculation. But what if we’re missing some truly interesting entertainment as well?
In the midst of my research, I tend to read a lot of news from different sources and dive deeper when I find something personally interesting. In this case, there are two movies that are coming out this year that I think are interesting, at least based on their trailers, and I want to know what others might think because no one else seems to be talking about them.
Colossal
In this film, Anne Hathaway plays a former party girl named Gloria who gets thrown out by her boyfriend and returns to her hometown. After meeting back up with her hometown friends and having a night of drinking, Gloria wakes up to new of a giant monster destroying the city of Seoul. As she tries to figure out her life, she discovers that there is a connection between her and the monster that is unique. The film also stars Jason Sudeikis (Son of Zorn) and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk). The film is written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes). The movie looks like a dark, comedic combination of Garden State and Pacific Rim.

American Fable
This film is a fantasy thriller set in the American midwest in the 1980’s. It centers on a young girl named Gitty (Peyton Kennedy) who lives in a world filled with the dark characters in her mind. Her family lives on a farm and are close to losing their home. As Gitty plays in the field, she finds the silo her father tells her never to play around. She discovers that her father has kidnapped a mysterious man played by Richard Schiff (The West Wing) and has him trapped in the silo. Gitty must decide whether to do the right thing and what the right thing is as her world begins to unravel around her. The film is the feature film debut of writer/director Anne Hamilton. It looks reminiscent of Frailty and Pan’s Labyrinth.
