Last week was the week of all trailers. No joke. “Ant-Man,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Fantastic Four” and “Jurassic World.” That’s quite a list. Some of these gave us first looks, more tease or a glimpse at plot.
Star Wars provided fan service while Batman v Superman bothered some fans of the iconic DC comic heroes. Ant-Man looks as if this is Marvel taking a risk and trying to be different again, similar to last summer’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which turned out to be okay. (Ha ha.) The Fantastic Four reboot seems to be shaping up nicer than expected for 20th Century Fox. And Jurassic World continues to come across as a possible mixed reaction waiting to happen.
In a perfect world, we nerds would just shut up and appreciate that we’re going to be seeing an awesome slate of films that feed our love for this kind of culture. But that’s never going to happen, so let’s take a quick look at the upcoming summer potential blockbusters. Except for Batman v Superman, of course. That releases sometime in 2016, according to the trailer.
“Imagine a soldier the size of an insect. The ultimate secret weapon.”
What a great line said by Corey Stoll to open up the trailer with clips of Ant-Man in action. A few seconds later, we have our first look at Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd. This is a strong cast, including Stoll, which should help cover up any story flaws. Almost immediately after Rudd is show we’re given a good amount of humor:
- 0:45-0:58,
- 1:27-1:33,
- 2:00-2:04,
- 2:17-2:22,
Rudd is an interesting choice of actor for Marvel, but he may end up being perfect as Scott Pym.
After we watch “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and Jurassic World, the action in Ant-Man appears to be different and fun with the size changes between big and small when he and Yellow Jacket face-off.
The practical effects J.J. Abrams is using look really good. Now it’s time to nerd out. Mark Hamill’s voice as Luke!? Darth Vader’s burned helmet!. R2-D2! Luke’s daughter being handed down his old light saber!? X-Wings! Who is the Sith lord at the 1:10 mark? Storm Troopers! Millennium Falcon! Chewbacca! Han Solo! Holy nostalgia blast!
In the first minute of the trailer, we can already tell it’s a Zack Snyder film. His unique color palette is well-known at this point. His “Man of Steel” is probably a very good example of how this film will turn out to be in tone.
The best part of the trailer follows when we see a montage of our first look at Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne with a reverse shot to his bat suit; him in the suit; the bat wing, assuming that it is; and the back of the bat mobile. Then, a great shot of Affleck in the suit he’ll be wearing during his fight with Superman and a robotic-like voice over of Batman taunting Superman. It’s up for debate, but this likely isn’t going to be Affleck’s take on the Batman voice.

Another dark trailer in the same vein as Snyder’s Batman v Superman. We’re given a good look at Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic; Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman; Johnny Storm/Human Torch; and Ben Grimm/The Thing, who’s the highlight. And we get our first look at Victor Domashev/Dr. Doom.
Okay, Starlord gaining the “respect” of raptors. YYYYeeeaah… Pratt’s humor and performance may end up having to save this film. Also, it’s real smart to genetically modify one’s own dinosaur. (Pun seriously intended.)
An aside, after watching Marvel’s “Daredevil” on Netflix all I can say is Vincent freaking D’onofrio! Sorry Jurassic Park fans. This is going to be a straight-up action flick.
Which of these are you more or less excited for after seeing these trailers?
