Overview
Steven Schwartz, a US attorney, is facing sanctions after using fake legal citations generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT for a case he was handling. Schwartz defended himself in an affidavit, claiming he was “unaware that its content could be false,” despite ChatGPT’s widely known warning that it can sometimes produce incorrect information. The attorney represented Roberto Mata in a lawsuit against Avianca for injuries sustained onboard one of its planes in 2019. Schwartz has vowed never to use AI again to supplement his legal research without absolute verification of its authenticity. A hearing on the matter is now scheduled for June 8.
