We have an update concerning Sony’s Venom solo film. Yesterday, it was revealed that Venom was hiring crew members for the upcoming Atlanta shoot during the fall and we have a familiar name already working on the film.
Omega Underground has spotted that Sony has added German production designer Oliver Scholl (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Edge of Tomorrow, Suicide Squad) as his IMDB page lists Venom as his next film. Crew listings on the site are more reliable than actors.
Interesting enough, Oliver previously worked as the production designer on Spider-Man: Homecoming which isn’t surprising but with Homecoming’s production handled by Marvel Studios it’s odd to see Sony snatching him up for this spinoff (along with Homecoming’s art director Drew Monahan). That’s unless they want some consistency to the look of Spider-Man movies, spinoff or not.
Scholl spoke to ScreenRant about crafting the look for the film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“We want to show the contrast between his world and the glam, I’m simplifying, the glam world of Avengers and Captain America and everything like that. So it’s a process. I mean, you read the script. You have a lot of discussions. As this is a collaboration between Sony and Marvel and Marvel are obviously the creators of the original characters and it’s like they have the creative reins as far as I can tell. And it’s a collaboration. But in the end, it’s really great because Kevin has this vision and Amy and like you try to get their ideas because Kevin knows the material. So you have a lot of it’s a interesting process getting like ideas out from him. I’m coming from I would describe myself as neutral. I mean, I grew up with a lot, some may say way too much science fiction stories. Not necessarily just comics. But obviously Kevin Feige as for example at Marvel knows his material and is really keen on getting the tone right so it fits in the overall Marvel Universe. Yeah, that’s part of the challenges.”
“World building is very fancy work. But in the end you do that. You build, it’s not production design is not about building sets, it’s about building environments. It’s about settings, providing the setting scenes where the action takes place and the set is just a specific part of some part of the setting. And you achieve the setting and the environment by using sets and visual effects and whatever is necessary.”
It remains to be seen if Scholl will also be involved with Silver and Black/Homecoming 2.
Could the spinoffs not be as distanced from Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and the MCU as interviews with Marvel’s Kevin Feige (praised Hardy’s casting) might suggest?

SplashReport previously revealed that Marvel controlled character Dominic Fortune might be in Silver and Black. Fortune was going to be played by veteran character actor Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty, Broken Arrow, Ransom, Domino, The Last Castle, Cider House Rules) in Marvel’s Most Wanted pilot. It would be odd that Marvel would hand over MCU characters to Sony for unconnected spinoffs.
Tom Holland and Tom Hardy might not have been in the same room during the filming of Locke, but Holland played the son of Hardy’s character in the drama. Holland (via ScreenRant and CinemaBlend) suggested he’d love to be in Venom and work with Hardy if it was allowed to happen.
“That’s something that’s not up to me,” Holland replied. “I am the MCU’s Spider-Man, I exist in a world with the Avengers. If Venom exists in that world, I don’t really know the answer to that question. I don’t think he does. But yeah, any opportunity to work with Tom Hardy, I’d jump to it.”
“The Venom movie takes place in a different universe,” Holland said, “so I have no plans to show up in those movies anytime soon. But you know, things change! We’ll have to wait and see.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is expected to begin filming next summer, so it’s possible they could film a scene or two with Holland during that shoot before Venom’s October release. The film is over a year away from release and there are a lot of things could happen concerning it’s MCU connection or Feige to backtrack on those press tour comments.
Venom is confirmed to shoot this fall in Atlanta and set for release on October 5th, 2018.
