We Have Demons #1

The wait is finally over. Readers have known about Scott Snyder’s ComiXology initiative for some time, waiting for things to start with the writer’s longtime Batman partner, Greg Capullo. We Have Demons #1 has arrived on ComiXology, and it did not disappoint.

Snyder sticks in a warning on the very first page, trying to set an unsettling tone right from the jump. But what really ramps things up is the very next page, where Capullo’s art comes into play.

Of course, the We Have Demons #1 indicates this story is going to be nuts. Snyder knows how to utilize Capullo’s talents as well as anyone. So this series-opening issue had to explain to us why this is going to be more than a chance for Capullo to show off.

Not only does Snyder accomplish that in short order, he proves in just a few pages that this story instantly needs to be adapted for a film or TV. Capullo’s pencils, combined with Jonathan Glapion’s inks, help give the story that feel, but Snyder carefully build up this larger-than-life story while making sure we invest in the We Have Demons’ main character, Lam.

But We Have Demons #1 only scratches the surface with Lam. There’s clearly a lot to unpack with her, and it looks like Snyder will mix in a different narrative style while doing so. And the position she finds herself in is only going to get less complicated.

So buckle up — SCOTTober is upon us.
