As with any franchise, some of the movies are better than others. With the Marvel franchise, because there have been so many films, there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time, you can explore the new movies in chronological order, by phrases or by simply searching for the best movies to see first.

What are the best Marvel movies of the last decade?

Marvel

Marvel was started in 1939 as a comic book publisher.

Early titles included the Fantastic Four and other superhero titles. Post-WWII, superhero comings went out of fashion and the company published other genres of comic books but after DC comics revitalized interest in superheroes, Marvel, led by Stan Lee and other writers, started to churn out comics featuring Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, the Inhumans, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, the Silver Surfer and others.

Much of the new success was due to Lee’s focus on characterization and adult issues, meaning that these comic books were no longer just for kids.

Marvel ventured into a radio series in 1975 and produced a record but it wasn’t until 2009, when the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment (Marvel Comics’ parent corporation) that the Cinematic Universe was born. Early films included “Seekers of the Weird”  and “Once Upon a Time.” Today Marvel continues to produce novels and comics but is also heavily invested in Marvel Studios which has, in a decade, redefined the franchise movie.

Marvel films have released 22 films to date which is more than any other movie franchise in history. The movies are generally well-received – Rotten Tomatoes shows an average 84% approval rating for Marvel movies which is 16% more than other top-grossing franchises.

They focus on keeping viewers coming back by combining continuity with innovation. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, says, “We try to keep audiences coming back in greater numbers by doing the unexpected and not simply following a pattern or a mold or a formula.”

Iron Man

Iron Man is generally acknowledge to be the best Marvel movie to date. It has a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and continues to be the film by which all other comics films (including DC Comics films) are measured. Iron Man set a cultural phenomenon that will stand for a long time.

Iron Man was notable because it introduced Tony Stark, the character who would go on to play significant roles in future Marvel films. The first movie set the stage for his future actions by contextualizing his actions which gave audiences a standard on which to base his appearances in later Marvel movies – not only Iron Man 2 but also the Avengers movies,  Captain America: Civil War and others).

Iron Man was also notable for providing a morally-nuanced look at the super hero universe and for exploring the reasons that Tony did the things that he did.

The Avengers

The Avengers is seen as one of Marvel’s best movies because it was unexpected and unprecedented. It was the first major team-up superhero film and showcased how well it could be done. Avengers brought together characters who had been introduced in previous film such as Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America.

These are characters that audiences had learned to know and care for and the film’s plot successfully weaved their individual stories together into one coherent tale that established them as a team.

Audiences responded to the atmosphere in which characters that they had come to love were finally getting their due. . Fans also appreciate that Avengers is a widely diverse group and the dynamics are always changing, which means that nothing can be taken for granted.

Black Panther

The 2018 Black Panther, with its all-black cast, was under a tremendous amount of pressure to produce a stellar, flawless  performance — and it did. For viewers of all nationalities and backgrounds it was inspiring to see a  film in which everyone, heroes, villains and everyone else was black.

The entire cast and crew put forth all the effort needed to ensure that the film would live up to all expectations. For the Afro-American community, Black Panther created science and technology role models for black youth.

Black Panther also put emphasis on making sure that there were multiple varied and interesting female characters represented in the movie and showed the impact of strong female characters.

Throughout the film, new characters melded seamlessly with old favorites so all of the portrayals seem well-rounded and unique.

Black Panther was also notable because it paved the way for lesser-known superheroes – it proved that a comic book character can be a massive success on the big screen even if it’s not (yet) a household name.
