Ever wonder how Ralph and Vanellope actually get to the internet? And who do they meet once they’re there? A brand-new trailer is now available for “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.”
“Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet—which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet—the netizens—to help navigate their way, including a webite entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site “BuzzzTube.” Directed by Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph”) and Phil Johnston (co-writer “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Cedar Rapids,” co-writer “Zootopia,”), and produced by Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Bolt”), “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-Ralph 2” hits theaters on Nov. 21, 2018.
Full disclosure: I saw Wreck-It Ralph 10+ times in the theater in 2012/2013. I collect WIR toys, I have a giant WIR standee, and I’m as insufferably stoked for WIR2 as any of my friends or family can attest.
Ralph did his best to break the internet back in February when he dropped the first trailer for the long-awaited sequel to the Academy Award Nominated 2012 animated film that’s tailor-made for anyone who grew up in the era of the corner video game arcade. Today, a second trailer has been released by Walt Disney Animation Studios, and it offers up a bit more of what we’ve learned about the story so far, but also suggests a pretty substantial departure from the first outing. And depending on what you found to like in the first Wreck-It Ralph, that may be good or bad news.
Where the first trailer highlighted the return of our beloved Ralph & Vanellope, this one seems to instead focus on the Disney angle. WIR1 was a love letter to the world of the video game arcade, WIR2 looks to be replacing that with a cavalcade of nods and Easter eggs to the Disney universe. Not that there’s anything at all wrong with Disney, but if you’re here to see more character development for Ralph and Vanellope (or Felix and Calhoun, who’ve yet to appear in either trailer) in the world of the Litwak’s arcade, you might be in for a disappointment.
Of course, it’s equally possible that this is just the “let’s show the Disney stuff” trailer and Moore & Johnston are holding back the deeper character stuff for the film. That remains to be seen, and a die-hard fan can be hopeful.
Either way, I’m there opening night.
