X-O Manowar #1
Valiant Entertainment

Written By: Matt Kindt
Art By: Tomas Giorello

I have to admit, I’ve never read any of the X-O Manowar comics before. He’s always been a character that intrigued me. I knew the basic plot of the main character and his armor. Well, after reading issue #1 of the Valiant’s new X-O Manowar, I may have to go back and correct that.

We open up on the planet Gorin and see a bearded, scared ,and one handed Aric working in the fields. He’s found peace farming with his lady friend Schon, and wants nothing to do with a new war that is arising.

Soon Aric is “drafted” into the Azure army. He isn’t really seen as a fit soldier, missing a hand and all. He, and others like him, will be mostly used as fodder. Aric battles his way through seemingly impossible odds, until he gains the attention of the general, who now wants to send Aric on what he calls a suicide mission. For this mission he’ll need the assistance of his armor one last time.

Giorello’s artwork is stunning. The world that he and Kindt are creating with this almost barbarianistic planet with touches of modern technology is beautiful. The art is so gritty and perfect for what is going on. This story isn’t really breaking any new ground, we’ve all read something similar to it before, but it is doing it so well that I think anyone could appreciate it. I’m going to be keeping my eyes on this series. I think it’s going to be great!

Great writing and beautiful art! Can’t wait to see where this one goes!
