A Thing Called Truth #2

A Thing Called Truth #2 is actually looking like it might be able to deliver on some of the situations it gave us a chance to glimpse as it began! Yes, if you’re wondering, I AM rubbing my hands together happily at the thought of this satisfaction. And no, if you’re also wondering if I’m about to give you spoilers, I am NOT. This is far better if you discover the questions answered on your own. But I can say a thing or two that may draw you in if you’ll follow me to the next paragraph. Do we have a deal?

Are you still with me? Great. That’s more of a choice than Mag seemed to get when… well you’ll see. This part of the story also uses a flashback at first, but it does let us know how and when our main characters really met in issue one. It also fills in more details about Dorian, whereas the first issue focused more on how Mag got to “square one.” We do not yet revisit the climax of the story where we started in the first issue, but we definitely find out more about how the wild ride may have gotten into motion.

PORTRAIT OF DORIAN?

We find out a bit about what’s been going on in Dorian’s life that brings her into Mag’s, and why she may be in the mood for some risks. We also find out how Dr. Mag makes quite an unusual decision, but for endearingly logical reasons, shown in an interesting type of splash page that any scientist who also appreciates artistic license could love.

TELL ME WHY

We also find out a few of the answers to some of the “But WHY?” questions raised in the first part of this story. I can already see that some people will enjoy the tension between issues, while others may prefer this as a binge read. It was hard to wait, even for a reasonably short time between these first two issues! And I say this as a notorious delayer of gratification, even if I do have my moments at the opposite extreme as a reader. But enough about me and all of us who read. Let’s get back to Dorian. We find out more about what drives her, and what her life was like leading up to her adventure, and her seeking of A Thing Called Truth.

THE BOTTOM LINE

In sum, there is still plenty that is compelling. Questions are answered, yet new, even more intriguing questions are raised, too. Both characters continue to show quirky likeability, and the kind of chemistry that almost makes their unusual decisions relatable. Maybe it’s just me, but I found myself thinking I might make some similar choices myself, if caught in this set of contexts. And even where I’m not sure what I’d do, I’m still having a lot of fun wondering what I might, and even more importantly, what THEY might do next. Again, I say, more! Give us more of A Thing Called Truth. Forgive me, Jack Nicholson, for revisiting one of your iconic lines, but I really CAN handle this Truth! Bring it on, creative team lead by Iolanda Zanfardino with Image Comics.

SUMMARY

A Thing Called Truth #2, by Image Comics, begins to answer some questions raised by its kick-off. We get even more reasons to invest interest in our main characters, and more curiosity about how this story will go forward from here. I am happy to say that this both satisfies and leaves this reader wanting even more from the next issue.
