Head For The Skys in Airheart (Review)

Imagine yourself in the shoes of a young woman who dreams to reach the stratosphere with promise of riches and fame for a lifetime. This day dreamer is ambitious and looks to the skies in hopes to make her dreams come true.

This is a great game for a variety of gaming styles. As a father of three, my gaming time can be hijacked by bad dreams or wet beds. Lucky for me, I can easily return to Amelia’s hanger rather quickly and leave the game as is until I return. If you’d rather soar to higher levels, catch fish, and venture deeper into deadly territory for longer periods, then you can do that too.

Airheart is a dieselpunk game about a young woman who flies her old trusty airplane and catches skyfish among beautiful sky islands.

Being a sky fisher(wo)man is not as easy as you think. Throughout the skylayers, take on your skyfishing competition (pirates and sky drones) head on if you must. Be sure to return back home safely or else your earnings and treasures will soon be lost.

Catch and sell fish, upgrade your airplane and weaponry, and analyze scraps to craft blueprints to build new parts. Keep your eyes opened for higher skylayers to advance even higher above the city of Granaria.  Focus, now. Work hard to be the hunter and not the hunted.

Game play is rather smooth – even on an older dual-core laptop. Reducing visuals to 1024×768 didn’t degrade quality as expected. The smoothing effects kicked in to allow the sharp colours, vivid textures, and beautiful landscape shine through. Give this game a good thirty minutes and you’ll soon find your groove. Be careful to advance through skylayers quickly, as your skyfishing competition can become rather aggressive and intense.

At the beginning, I spent much of my time escaping and less time playing an offensive strategy.  As weapons and plane upgrades are purchased, this will soon change. Spend some time saving your hard earned money to strengthen your plan and weaponry. From there, you will be prepared for a good battle to ensure your skyfishing territory is reserved for another day.

Controls are a little awkward on a laptop keyboard and I wish there was an option to change the controls. There is partial controller support which may be a workaround until controls can be modified. Having a multiplayer or co-op option would add some variety to Airheart would add further fun and excitement.

Airheart can be purchased through Steam for PC.  This game does have a lot of promise as an Early Access Game; however, it’d be so much better to be able include co-op or multiplayer options. Overall, Airheart is a fun game for many levels of gamers to enjoy!
