Generative AI Startup Anthropic Offers Legal Protection for Users

Anthropic, a generative AI startup, recently updated its terms and conditions to provide legal protection for paying customers using its Claude generative AI chatbot and other enterprise AI tools. This move aligns with similar indemnification offered by companies like Google and OpenAI, as well as synthetic media providers like Shutterstock and Adobe. The update not only safeguards customers from copyright infringement claims but also signals stability, which could attract potential investors for an upcoming $750 million funding round.

Anthropic Protection

The updated terms from Anthropic assure commercial clients that they will be defended against accusations of intellectual property rights violations in court. This includes any synthetic media or generative AI outputs produced on the platform. The demand for services like chatbots and content generation is high, but the lawful use of these technologies is often disputed.

Under the updated terms, Anthropic will defend its customers from copyright infringement claims resulting from their authorized use of the services and their outputs. The company will also cover the costs of any approved settlements or judgments that arise. However, the indemnification does not cover misconduct violations or modifications to Anthropic’s systems. This legal protection is exclusive to paying API users and does not extend to free users.

Long-Term Commitment and Expansion

By offering legal protection and clarifying its position, Anthropic demonstrates its long-term commitment amid ongoing debates surrounding the use of generative AI technology. With the potential for a $750 million funding round, the company aims to explain its stance before a significant expansion fueled by new capital begins in the coming year. Anthropic has already raised $550 million in investments earlier this year. In addition to the updated terms, the company also announced widening access to the API and introduced the Messages API feature to help users identify errors in the programming process.

Claude 2.1: Enhanced Generative AI Chatbot

Anthropic recently launched Claude 2.1, an upgraded version of its generative AI chatbot. This new iteration improves the AI’s comprehension and reduces hallucinations. It also doubles the token context window from 100,000 tokens to 200,000 tokens. Claude 2.1 includes a tool use feature that facilitates workflows through external APIs and databases. Additionally, it introduces a system prompts setup, allowing users to provide custom instructions to Claude, placing its responses in context or assigning it specific roles.

Overall, Anthropic’s legal protection offering and the release of Claude 2.1 reflect the company’s dedication to providing advanced generative AI tools while addressing the concerns surrounding their use.
