‘Ballerina’ Poised To Bring A Female Assassin Lead To ‘John Wick’ Universe

Jul 25, 2017

Hollywood Reporter has learned that we’ll have a new addition to the John Wick cinematic universe with a spec-script titled Ballerina.

Basil Iwanyk, the creator and producer of the John Wick films will oversee it as it’s producer via Thunder Road at Lionsgate. The new screenwriter Shay Hatten is a big fan of Shane Black and , so there is some promise that this could end-up becoming Wick’s female counterpart in the franchise possibly leading to a crossover. Something fans have been speculating would happen with Atomic Blonde which is impossible as their is 30 year difference and the two films are at other studios.

Details are scarce but the project is being compared to Luc Besson’s massive hit La Femme Nikita about a female assassin, although, it sounds more like the Leon: The Professional sequel Matilda that was never made. It also seems to echo projects like Red Sparrow and Black Widow.

Ballerina has been described as being in the vein of La Femme Nikita, the 1990s female-centric assassin movie that helped launch the career of filmmaker Luc Besson, but with a more pulpy, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn.

Ballerina is said to focus a female assassin that goes on a revenge mission to kill another assassin who murdered her family.

An actress isn’t mention but we can’t help but suggest the likes of Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, and Gal Gadot for the role due to their action chops.
