In a new report from The Wrap, Will Smith and director David Ayer will apparently by reuniting for the fantasy cop thriller The Bright for Warner Bros. An interesting tidbit includes that Ayer and Smith will be back for Suicide Squad 2, which is currently in development over at Warner Bros. and could be shooting as early as 2017.
Ayer hopes to fit the project into his fall schedule before Warner Bros. brings him and Smith back for a planned “Suicide Squad” sequel in 2017.
If this is the case, we assume that the release date for Suicide Squad 2 could be setup for sometime in 2018 or early 2019. We have no clue if Ayer is also writing the sequel, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he becomes too busy to do so.
It’s unknown at the moment if we’ll see Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and others reprise their roles too.
Reaction has been extremely good for the first installment’s marketing campaign, but seems a bit premature to already develop a sequel. We’ve seen what happens with the studio attempts that like they did with Green Lantern, but Squad could be a different animal entirely. There seems to be slightly more confidence with this project than Batman v Superman, so it might be smart to at least start developing a script in case it’s a huge hit like Deadpool or Guardians.
There’s rumors that Smith’s Deadshoot could also be apart of the next solo Batman film, currently being written by Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck.
