Death of the DC Universe

Aug 14, 2020

In the last few months the DC universe has shown many telltale signs of its eventual death. What may be the most imminent sign of the app shutting down was the removal of the yearly subscription plan from the app. According to Living comic book Legend Jim Lee the DC Universe’s content will be moving over to HBO max. In Recent months notable and profitable shows moved over to HBO max like the Doom patrol as well as Harley Quinn. Titan’s will likely be the next show to migrate over to HBO Max as Stargirl was recently moved over to the CW.

Jim Lee had this to say.“The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max,” Lee explained. “Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC, but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.” Lee added, “In regards to the community and experience that DCU created, and all the backlist content, something like 20,000 to 25,000 different titles, and the way it connected with fans 24-7, there is always going to be a need for that. So we’re excited to transform it and we’ll have more news on what that will look like. It’s definitely not going away.”

In speculation, DC and WB understand that the consolidation of all DC properties under the HBO Max power house is the best direction for the brand. In this coming merger DC content will likely be available to a larger audience. Hopefully when the licensing for the DCU expires, HBO max can absorb the entirety of the app’s format including the comic book library and build DCU into HBO Max’s Libraries.
