Dr. Strange Has Found Its Wong!

Jan 21, 2016

The Dr. Strange movie has found its Wong. According to The Hollywood Report, Asian actor Benedict Wong has been cast as Dr. Strange’s trust manservant Wong (yea that’s not confusing). You may recognize Benedict Wong from his recent role in Ridley Scott’s Martian where he played the Jet Propulsion Laboratory director.

Wong_(Earth-616)

In the comics Wong is a long time Marvel mainstay having been around senses the 60s. He is Dr. Strange’s loyal and trusted manservant who deals in matters of the occult and has an incredible knowledge of martial arts. He acts as butler, protector, healer and friend to the Doctor and is a necessary inclusion in any Dr. Strange incarnation.

It great to see Marvel not shy away from what could be construed as an outdated and stereotypical character. I think the fact the hired an Asian actor for the role shows that they want to take the character and source material seriously. So let’s hope that Wong isn’t just your typical butler but instead more of an Alfred type in that he is Dr. Strange’s partner in fighting the forces of evil

Dr. Strange hits thearters on November 4, 2016 and is set to star Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen.
