Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming to America 2’ Taps Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter (‘Selma,’ ‘Black Panther’)

The long-gestating ‘Coming to America 2’ has enlisted costume designer Ruth E. Carter. The film is a sequel to the 1988 comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, and both Murphy and Hall will be reprising their roles.

Carter made the announcement on Twitter, the post is below:

Carter’s most recent film ‘Black Panther’ lead to an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. She is a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, with films like ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘Oldboy,’ and ‘Chi-Raq.’ Other projects include Scott Sanders’ ‘Black Dynamite,’ Ava DuVernay’s ‘Selma,’ and History’s ‘Roots’ miniseries.

Craig Brewer (‘Hustle & Flow’) is directing the film. Brewer, Murphy, and Carter recently collaborated on Netflix’s ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ releasing this year. Kenya Barris (‘Black-ish’) is rewriting a script by original ‘Coming to America’ writers Barry Blaustein & David Sheffield.

As of now, there is no official title, but it was once ‘Coming 2 America.’

The premise of the film is below:

“Akeem (Murphy) learns about a long lost son, and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.”

Moreover, the goal is to reassemble the original cast, which includes Shari Headley, John Amos, and James Earl Jones.

Further, ‘Coming to America 2’ is aiming to begin filming on August 8th and wrap in late October.

Paramount is releasing the film on August 7, 2020.
