The Epomaker Luma84 is a low-profile mechanical keyboard designed to offer a comfortable and efficient typing experience for various uses, including gaming, office work, and customization. It is priced at $109.99, which is a good price considering the quality of the build and the typing experience. It’s available in two colorways: black with blue or white with purple, as well as two different switch types from Gateron.

Design and Typing Experience

The EPOMAKER Luma84 is meticulously designed for both aesthetics and a superior typing feel. It features an 84-key, 75% layout and is constructed from durable anodized aluminum. For the keycaps, it utilizes greasy-free PBT plastic with a DSA low-profile profile, which are manufactured using both double shot and dye-sub techniques to ensure clear legends, including Mac modifiers.

A key aspect of its design is the innovative cushioned Gasket-Mount structure, which is notably adopted for a low-profile keyboard. This design prevents harsh bottoming out by suspending the plate with gaskets and filling the internal hollow spaces with foams and silicones, contributing to a cushioned and flexible typing feel. This is further enhanced by multiple layers of sound dampening materials, specifically sandwich foam, switch pad, sand-enhancement pad, switch socket foam, and bottom sound-absorbing foam, all working together to deliver a cushioned and thocky typing experience. The switches themselves are described as well-lubed and tuned for optimal performance.

In terms of physical dimensions, the Luma84 measures 31.4cm in length, 12.85cm in width, 2.55cm in height on the ESC side, and 1.65cm in height on the spacebar side. It is available in two distinct color options: black with blue and white with purple. Personally, I’m drawn the the latter.

Switches and Customization

The EPOMAKER Luma84 provides a high degree of customization and performance, primarily through its switch options and software capabilities. Its equipped with 84 Gateron low-profile switches, offering users a choice between Gateron Low-Profile Red (Linear) or Gateron Low-Profile Brown (Tactile) switches. Both switch types boast a lifespan of 60 million keystrokes. Specifically, the Red switches have a trigger force of 50±15gf, a pre-travel of 1.7±0.4mm, and a total travel of 3.2±0.2mm. The Brown switches, on the other hand, feature a slightly heavier trigger force of 55±15gf, with the same pre-travel of 1.7±0.4mm and total travel of 3.2±0.2mm.

The keyboard is designed for effortless customization, featuring full-key hot-swappable sockets that allow users to easily swap out 3-pin or 5-pin mechanical switches to suit their individual preferences, including those with various trigger forces. Beyond the physical switches, the Luma84 offers vibrant visual customization with its per-key south-facing LEDs that provide dynamic RGB backlighting. This lighting can be effortlessly customized in terms of color and effects using hotkeys or the webpage-based VIA software, which conveniently eliminates the need for software downloads across different operating systems. Furthermore, the Luma84 is fully VIA programmable, supporting QMK/VIA software to significantly enhance workflow and productivity. This functionality allows users to automate repetitive tasks with macros, streamline coding processes, boost office efficiency, remap frequently used keys for personalized ergonomic layouts, and even adjust trigger forces.
