‘Fast & Furious’ Female-Led Spin-off Confirmed In Development

Jan 24, 2019

The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is revving up for another installment. Vin Diesel took to Instagram to announce the new film in development.

His statement from the post:

“As you know, there are three new spin offs that we have promised Universal… well this week we heard a pitch for the Fast female protagonist driven spinoff l created in 2017, and you can tell by the smile on Samantha’s face it was VERY exciting. Shout out to Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Welcome to the Fast FAMILY..”

So there you have it, a story concept Diesel conceived two years ago is making progress. We now know three of the most prolific female blockbuster screenwriters right now are attached to the project. The trio have at the very least made the pitch. We’ll have to see how the actual screenplay develops in the future, but it can be assumed they’ll write the script. Diesel and his sister Samantha Vincent will produce.

In-depth credits of Perlman, Beer, and Dworet:

  • Nicole Perlman is best known for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1’ and the upcoming ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.’ She also has a story credit on ‘Captain Marvel.’
  • Lindsey Beer has several films on her slate. Her most recent film was Netflix’s ‘Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.’ Up next is Doug Liman’s ‘Chaos Walking,’ for which she is one of many writers. Netflix and Millarworld also have her set to write ‘Empress.’ Beer is also going to write ‘The Kingkiller Chronicle.’ Finally, she is reportedly attached to the upcoming ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ reboot.
  • Geneva Robertson-Dworet has also worked on ‘Captain Marvel,’ with a screenplay credit. Her recent film was last year’s ‘Tomb Raider.’ Next up is Lord and Miller’s ‘Artemis.’ Dworet and Beer were originally attached to rewrite the Marvel film ‘Silver & Black.’ But, the project was dissolved, in favor of solo movies for both Silver Sable and Black Cat.

The trio were all in the Hasbro shared universe writers room. Such projects that came from that were ‘M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand’ and ‘ Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light.’

The three writers even have their own production company, ‘Known Universe,’ to develop projects. Perhaps the company will be a part of this production as well?

The future of the franchise:

However, it’ll be awhile until we see this film, as there’s already three other (known) ‘Fast & Furious’ films in the pipeline. There is one more, unknown, film in the works, but we’ll get to that later.

The Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spin-off ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ will release on August 2. Also, Justin Lin is returning to direct the franchise for the ninth and tenth installments. Currently, 9 will release on April 10, 2020 and 10 will April 2, 2021. The tenth film is reportedly the final film in the mainline franchise, with spin-offs taking the lead afterwards.

This leads us to the last film, the unknown spin-off, as announced in this Instagram post. This will hopefully get more light shed on it soon, but as of right now, we know nothing.

In short, prepare for the female-led spin-off to release in 2022, at the earliest.
