The C7 Max was provided by FlexiSpot for review.

The C7 Max has an MSRP of $699.99, but is available now for $449.99. It’s one of the most comfortable office chairs I’ve tested. In part, that’s because of the following trifecta of features: 3D headrest, adaptive lumbar support, and 5D armrests. Having a range of adjustable components requires thoughtful design and engineering. The folks at FlexiSpot are highly experienced. I can speak to this first-hand having tested several of their office chairs.

A Closer Look and my setup

For a bit of context, I’m clocking in at 5’11” and around 190 lbs. My typical workday involves about four hours of sitting and another four on my feet, often utilizing a slide-out keyboard tray for my peripherals. This setup demands a chair that can seamlessly transition between focused work and more relaxed postures.

The moment you settle into the C7 Max, you realize that a little personalization goes a long way. Thankfully, FlexiSpot has made adjusting the key elements intuitive. The 3D headrest offers five degrees of vertical adjustment, allowing you to raise or lower it to perfectly cradle your neck. Plus, you can articulate it forward or backward to find that sweet spot of support.

Moving down, the backrest itself has a generous 2.36″ of height adjustability. This crucial feature ensures that the lumbar support hits you in just the right place, and according to FlexiSpot, it accommodates users ranging from 5’7″ to a towering 6’9″.

Then there’s the seat cushion. Forget standard foam; the C7 Max elevates comfort with a layer of latex cotton. FlexiSpot highlights latex’s mold resistance and hypoallergenic properties, which are certainly welcome. For me, the magic lies in the balance – I sink into the seat just enough to feel cushioned, but it retains a supportive firmness that prevents that “stuck in the mud” sensation. Coming from another FlexiSpot chair with a mesh seat, which isn’t bad by any means, I’ve noticed a distinct shift in my posture with the C7 Max. I find myself less inclined to slouch and more naturally supported, making those longer work sessions far more enjoyable.

The Marvel of 5D Adjustability

The adjustability doesn’t stop there. The 5D armrests on the C7 Max are a revelation. They boast a 3.15″ vertical travel across seven distinct locking points, allowing you to dial in the perfect height for your arms, whether you’re typing away or taking a quick break.

And the versatility doesn’t end with vertical movement. These armrests can also swivel a full 360 degrees, while the armrest support itself can rotate an impressive 240 degrees. This level of articulation has proven incredibly useful in my daily workflow. When I’m leaning back for a bit of gaming, I can easily position the armrests to comfortably support my elbows. Conversely, when I’m locked in on writing a lengthy article or email, I can adjust them to slide neatly under my keyboard tray while still providing crucial elbow support. This is a level of adaptability that many other chairs I’ve tested simply haven’t been able to match with such ease. While gaming, I like to lean back and put my elbows on the armrest. While writing longer emails and articles, I prefer to sit upright, in which case I want my armrests to slide under my keyboard tray, yet still be a rest for my elbows. This requires some adjustment that other chairs have not been able to accommodate as easily.

The C7 Max is clearly designed to adapt to different working postures. The backrest reclines up to 135 degrees, allowing you to find that perfect angle for focused work or a brief moment of recline. Interestingly, FlexiSpot has even given names to these modes: “Work Mode” for the upright position and “Relax Mode” for the reclined posture. It’s a small touch, but it highlights the intentionality behind the design.

The C7 Max is ready for these two situations. The backrest adjusts up to 135 degrees. I later learned FlexiSpot has names for these two modes:

Rolling in Style (and Without Scratches!)

Having spent a decade reviewing chairs, one of the first questions I ask anyone seeking a recommendation is about their flooring. If you’re rocking hardwood floors like me, rubber wheels are an absolute must to avoid unsightly scratches. Thankfully, the C7 Max comes equipped with these floor-friendly rollers. This is a huge plus and demonstrates FlexiSpot’s attention to detail.

Beyond protecting your floors, the wheelbase itself is remarkably sturdy and features a thoughtful addition: a footrest on each of the five spokes. This might seem like a minor detail, but it adds an extra layer of comfort and practicality, especially when you’re in a reclined position.

Having reviewed many chairs over the past ten years, I am often asked by my family and friends for chair recommendations. Before naming models, I like to ask a few questions. One of which is about the flooring in the room the chair will be used. If you have hardwood floors, you absolutely want rubber wheels on your chair. Fortunately, the C7 Max has such wheels. This will prevent scratches from otherwise plastic wheels. Furthermore, the wheel base is incredibly sturdy and also features a footrest on each of the five spokes.
