Shawn Levy’s Free Guy movie now has a stunt coordinator and cinematographer onboard. The 20th Century Fox movie will mark Levy’s return to film since ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ in 2014.
Stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara will be giving his expertise on the (surprisingly) action-heavy film. Last year he was part of Francis Lawrence’s ‘Red Sparrow,’ Drew Goddard’s ‘Bad Times at the El Royale,’ and Ruben Fleischer’s ‘Venom.’ Some other movies on his resume include Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers,’ Chad Stahelski’s ‘John Wick,’ Colin Trevorrow’s ‘Jurassic World,’ and Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver.’ His most recent film is the upcoming spin-off releasing August 2: David Leitch’s ‘Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw.’
Cinematographer George Richmond is famous for shooting the first two ‘Kingsman’ films: ‘The Secret Service’ and ‘The Golden Circle.’ He’s also been a part of the last two films from director Dexter Fletcher: ‘Eddie the Eagle’ and the upcoming ‘Rocketman,’ releasing May 31. His most recent film was the Warner Bros. video game adaptation ‘Tomb Raider.’
Moreover, Levy was going to helm the long-gestating ‘Uncharted’ feature film adaptation, but took on ‘Free Guy’ instead. Director Dan Trachtenberg (’10 Cloverfield Lane, ‘Black Mirror: Playtest’) will now tackle ‘Uncharted,’ starring Tom Holland.
Since ‘Secret of the Tomb,’ Levy has been directing television, primarily the Netflix shows ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ Other films on his resume include the previous two ‘Night at the Museum’ films, ‘Date Night,’ and ‘Real Steel.’
‘Free Guy’ will be led by ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Detective Pikachu’ star Ryan Reynolds, as the titular character. The supporting cast, so far, includes Jodie Comer (‘Killing Eve’), Joe Keery (‘Stranger Things’), and Lil Rel Howery (‘Get Out’). The film was written by Matt Lieberman (‘The Christmas Chronicles,’ ‘The Addams Family (2019)’), and was originally a spec script in 2016.

“An action-comedy about a bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers he is a background character in the open world video game ‘Free City.’ With the help of an avatar (Comer), he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.”
Filming will begin this April, in Boston, Massachusetts.
‘Free Guy’ has a release date of July 3, 2020.
