‘Get Down’ Breakout Star Justice Smith Set To Star in Legendary’s ‘Detective Pikachu’

Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Netflix’s Get Down breakout star Justice Smith has signed on to star in Detective Pikachu. Making this technically one of the first African-American protagonists in the brands 20-year existence. Not much is known about the first live-action Pokemon film, however, we at Omega Underground revealed from leaked audition tapes that the lead male is for the role of Tim. Who is on a mission to discover what happened to his father along with a talking Pikachu.

The female lead has yet to be cast but features a junior reporter named Lucy. Who is trying to discover why all captured (tamed) Pokemon are turning on their masters and reverting back to being wild. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is set to helm from a script by Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch. Production is expected to begin this January in London.

Detective Pikachu is expected to hit theaters in 2019
