The circumstances that led to Jessica Cruz’ crippling anxiety are about to be revealed as the issue opens with Jessica out in the woods with her friends, the moment before they are attacked. The friends are given some personality in the brief moments that we see them and that’s good. It helps to establish that the loss has meaning to Jessica.

In the outside world, John Constantine has been brought in by the Justice League to find a way to help Simon reach Jessica in the swirling black hole over her apartment. Batman and Superman are desperate for answers and Constantine catches a break when Simon reports in. Unfortunately, he’s stuck without his ring, forced to fight dead Power Ring bearers and accompanied by the cowardly doppelganger of Hal Jordan. As Jessica relives the moment of her trauma and the choices she made, Simon is stuck fighting a mirror version of himself.

It works in a sense to let Simon come to a realization that he needed to in order to save Jessica. My hope is that the story progresses in a way that allows for that confrontation to have meaning for both characters. I enjoy the fact that Seeley is taking the time to explore the characters and Marion’s art enhances the story with great visual flair and details.
