Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #37
DC Comics

The issue opens with Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner being defeated by General Zod and his forces on the planet Jekuul. I’m ok with the story not burying the lead, but it does take away some of the suspense at the end knowing what’s already happened. On Mogo, John Stewart makes his issues with the newly formed Guardians known by quitting the corps. The Guardians ask him to reconsider and he points out the fact that their actions have led to some of the darkest times in the history of the Green Lantern Corps.

The Guardians convince John that his presence is one of the things that they need to keep them from repeating the mistakes of the past and Stewart reluctantly agrees to stay on and explains his decision to Hal and the rest of the corps. Meanwhile, Hal and Kyle travel to Jekuul to investigate and the events of the beginning of the issue play themselves out as they run into Zod.

I wanted to enjoy this issue more, but I found myself wanting more of the John Stewart vs the Guardians storyline because starting the issue off with Zod beating Hal and Kyle took away all the tension of the initial confrontation at the end of the issue. Subsequently, they are so easily beaten by Zod and his crew that even that tension was wasted. The fact that Zod and the Kryptonians are so overpowered in this issue makes any confrontation in the future a foregone conclusion. They wield the most powerful weapons in the universe and yet are so easily defeated, it was almost pathetic to watch. I hope it gets better from here.
