I Hate Fairyland is one of the best comedy comic books out there. With Volume 4, it collects the last 5 issues of #16-20 in the series and Gertrude is continuing to go through all kinds of personal hell as she ventures through Fairyland so that she can one day get back home. Time and time again she has come so close to getting back home. This time though she may have gotten her wish, and it definitely comes out as one of the most enjoyable issues in the trade. Not all of the focus is on Gertrude though. We actually get a very wonderful issue and get caught up to see what Duncan has been up to.

You’ll remember him as the little boy that got sucked into Fairyland and is still wearing his dragon costume and now he has a job working for their worlds UPS. You can definitely feel all the excitement and frustration these folks go through in the delivery service but it, unfortunately, doesn’t end well for Duncan. In fact, that’s what the rest of the trade deals with, it’s all about The End! I won’t go into too much on everything to come but just know that is a very dark time for Fairyland. I think you can guess on who will be called to be their savior too.

Nottingham #1 (Review)

The things that make I Hate Fairyland stand out are it’s writing and ways that it handles it setting. How Gertrude is just fed up with Fairyland and the way they change up some curse words along with how violent things tend to get. It makes the fairyland setting just that much funnier because we’re so used to things just being all bright and cute in these kinds of worlds. The coloring from Jean-Francois is probably some of my favorite work in comics. The way he makes everything so bright and fun while some characters get blown up just helps really land the comical tone of the book. And I can imagine he has a lot of fun coloring this series, given that there are so many possibilities with the kind of coloring he gets to use. I Hate Fairyland is definitely something everyone should check out and I love how epic this trade goes when two certain characters collide in the end.
