James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ Will Include a ‘Monstrous Femme Fatale’ Character; Filming Wraps February 2020

Apr 2, 2019

The Warner Bros. sort-of sequel to ‘Suicide Squad’ will have a monstrous femme fatale character. The description states she is a surly, creature-like, muscular alien woman. The role will require a heavy use of prosthetics, akin to Killer Croc.

Our own KC Walsh speculates the character could be either Rampage, Voodoo, or a genderbent Despero.

However, my speculation is that it is not one of the three above characters. Here is who I think it is:

If the rumor that the film will use John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad run as the source material is true, that could mean “muscular femme fatale alien” is describing Duchess. Also known as Lashina, she is a Female Fury from Apokolips. In the comic, she is stranded on Earth during a mission for Darkseid, after which she joins the Suicide Squad and becomes an active member of the team. She eventually returns to Apokolips and rejoins the Female Furies. If Duchess is indeed in ‘The Suicide Squad,’ that could be a major tie-in to Ava DuVernay’s upcoming ‘New Gods film.’ It could also mean they’re going for a more monstrous take on the character through the use of prosthetics.

Meanwhile, James Gunn serves as writer and director for ‘The Suicide Squad’ (the current title anyway). The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director will not make a direct sequel to 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad,’ but rather a “relaunch.” Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Further, the project is very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the ‘Guardians’ movies.

Recently, The Hollywood Reporter gave some insight about some of the other original Squad members:

“Gunn is said to be using mostly DC characters who did not appear in David Ayer’s 2016 film. Although, several are expected to return including Deadshot [with Idris Elba replacing Will Smith], Harley Quinn and Rick Flagg, originally played by Joel Kinnaman, say sources. Another source, however, says Flagg is no longer in the follow-up.”

According to Collider, several new characters will be in the film. This includes Ratcatcher, aka Otis Flannegan, Nanaue, aka King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, aka Mister Polka Dot, Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith. Dave Bautista (‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049’) is the frontrunner for the role of Peacemaker. According to the actor himself, Jai Courtney will be returning to the role of Captain Boomerang.

Moreover, Warner Bro.’s excitement of the project spread so much that the film is now in the casting stage. This is due to Gunn swiftly submitting several drafts, since his hiring last October.

Second unit director and supervising stunt coordinator Guy Norris (‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’) will return as well, as he was part of the first film.

Additionally, filming will begin this September in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Geek Vibes Nation, the film will wrap sometime in February 2020.

Warner Bros. will release the film on August 6, 2021.
