Jon Favreau’s ‘The Mandalorian’ Series Enlists Taika Waititi for Voice Role

Mar 21, 2019

What was once rumored by Discussing Film is now confirmed by the creator/writer/showrunner himself: Jon Favreau. He took to Instagram to confirm Taika Waititi has a voice role in his Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ series ‘The Mandalorian.’

Check out the post below:

However, Waititi may be playing a droid under the name of IG-11, and not the fan-favorite IG-88. This is due to the Patreon of Jason Ward (Making Star Wars) stating that the droid pictured above is not IG-88, but in fact IG-11. Pretty straightforward I’d say.

Moreover, Waititi is not just voice acting, he is also the director of the eighth episode, aka the season finale.

Other directors include:

  • Dave Filoni (‘Avatar: The Last Airbender,’ ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’) for Episodes 1 and 5
  • Rick Famuyiwa (‘Dope,’ ‘The Chi’) for Episodes 2 and 6
  • Deborah Chow (‘Mr. Robot,’ ‘American Gods’) for Episodes 3 and 7
  • Bryce Dallas Howard (‘Solemates,’ ‘Dads’) for Episode 4

And, if Discussing Film’s full rumor is correct, it could mean Jon Favreau and Bryce Dallas Howard also have roles in the series.

Further, the premise is below:

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic….”

The cast comprises of Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, and Werner Herzog.

Favreau is popular for the films ‘Elf,’ ‘Iron Man,’ and ‘The Jungle Book,’ while Waititi is prominent for ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople,’ and ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’

The series is currently in post-production.

The Disney+ streaming service will launch later this year, with ‘The Mandalorian’ as a launch title.
