Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Black Panther’ Sequel – Teases Namor/Atlantis?

Mar 12, 2018

During a lengthy interview with EntertainmentWeekly, Kevin Feige has confirmed that Marvel Studios will indeed pursue a Black Panther sequel and they’ve already been mulling over ideas but likely won’t be ready to announce it until further down the line. It’s not surprising since the first one has earned over a billion dollars in under a month of release.

“Nothing specific to reveal, other than to say we absolutely will do that. One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”

There are plenty of villains they could explore in the sequel outside of Wakanda as opening up to the world could invite nothing but conflicts.

Ryan Coogler wanted to add Kraven The Hunter but would likely need an okay from Sony Pictures before that could happen. Kraven would likely be introduced first by Sony, there are rumors he could have a cameo in Silver and Black.

Namor The Submariner is another good idea as the two have come to blows and even full on war. In the pages of The Defenders, Wakanda and Atlantis threatened to exchange nukes during a conflict. Having Namor introduced as a villain could be a solid way to insert him into the MCU similar to how T’Challa got his first introduction in Civil War.

Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom is another interesting one as he’s also another leader of a nation. However, this is likely more of a wish as the Fox/Disney merger is long off and if Noah Hawley’s Doom movie still happens Marvel will want to hold off on him.

An interesting homegrown villain is Death Tiger, who is from a Wakanda death cult. The after life stuff explored in the first movie could also have a dark side as well. That character is a total blank slate for Ryan Coogler to work with.

When asked about future characters or projects Feige said this.

We’re not ready to talk about what those are, but like the ones we’ve made in the first three phases, they’re ones that are either just great concepts for a film, great characters with great supporting characters, like Panther. New locations and lands that have cultural significance all their own, and continuing to tell stories that represent the world as it is, that represent people who perhaps haven’t seen themselves portrayed in this light in the past. We want to continue to do that.

That certainly sounds to us like Namor and his underwater kingdom of Atlantis which has been teased in multiple films including Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok, and even Ant-Man & The Wasp. We did a breakdown of these multiple teases recently.

It remains to be seen if Marvel still needs to work a deal out with Universal Pictures as this line from Kevin suggests that there are characters that still need to be negotiated. One of the few Marvel characters at other studios besides Fox is Namor at Universal.

There are some with a couple of other players involved that would have to be negotiated with. Then, of course, Spider-Man is still with Sony, independent of our agreement to do the films together. But most of them are home now. If that Fox thing happens, yeah, that’ll be the majority.

There has been a large ground-swell from fans to see Asian (East/South) and Polynesian actors be considered for Namor The Submariner along with seeing the population of Atlantis be made up of these various groups that are greatly underrepresented in Hollywood blockbusters.

Three actors with comic book film experience that have shown interest include Donnie Yen (Blade 2, Rogue One), Brian Tee (Fast and Furious, The Wolverine, Ninja Turtles 2), and Daniel Dae Kim (Hellboy, Lost).

Marvel has yet to officially date Black Panther 2.
