If you’ve been following my reviews, you know I’m always on the hunt for gear that punches above its weight, and let me tell you, Kiwi Ears might just have done it again with these headphones. Marketed squarely at DJs and gamers, this headset aims to be a versatile powerhouse, at a low price. It’s currently on sale for just $71.99 (down from $89.99). Having put these through their paces, I’ve got a lot of good things to say, and a few small quirks to mention, but overall, it’s a compelling package.

Build Quality & Design

Right out of the box, the Aventus impresses with a clear focus on comfort and ease of use. One of my absolute favorite features – a huge win over even some much pricier headphones like my Sennheisers or Sony XM5s – is that the earcups independently rotate and fold. This is important for DJs who need one ear on the mix and the other on the crowd, or for anyone who just wants to easily pack them away. Seriously, I love when headphones fold! I spent north of $300 on my Sony XM5s, and whenever I travel, I worry I’m going to break them because they don’t fold.

Kiwi Ears built the Aventus with lightweight, durable frames and cushy, vegan leather linings. You’ll find memory foam in both the earcups and the head strap, which definitely contributes to long-session comfort. While my big ears found them not an absolute perfect fit, they were still comfortable enough for extended wear without getting too sweaty.

Now, for a couple of minor observations: I did notice the memory foam in the earcups felt “a bit on the loose side”. And, while the build is solid for the price, the primary material is plastic. I’ve detected a “bit of a squeak” when turning the earcups and can’t help but wonder about the long-term longevity of the plastic near the turning mechanism. It’s not a huge red flag, but it’s something I’ll be keeping an eye on if I do a long-term follow-up.

Oh, and for those who like a bit of flash, the Aventus does sport RGB lighting on the earcups with two modes (rotating or static). Personally, I usually keep them off to maximize battery life, but it’s a fun addition.

Performance & User Experience: Sound That Delivers

The heart of the Aventus’s audio performance lies in its coaxial driver configuration: a 40mm dynamic driver for full-range sound and a 10mm independently tuned dynamic driver for enhanced clarity and a wider soundstage. I find the sound to be well balanced with a good overall range. Most of my listening is of podcasts, and a slew of music genres from the 90’s, including country, rock, and grunge.

On the noise cancellation front, the Aventus features hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), capable of reducing up to 35dB of ambient noise. This is achieved using a 5-microphone array for precise noise detection and neutralization. Crucially, the ANC works even in wired mode, which is a bonus. I found the noise cancellation to be quite good.

While the sound quality is generally excellent, I did notice a small amount of rattling in the left earcup when listening to bass-heavy tracks, specifically Soundgarden’s Pretty Noose. It’s a low rattle and not a huge deal for most music, but it was enough to be noticeable. So, if you’re a bass-head or a grunge fan, it’s something to be aware of. Call quality, thanks to that five-microphone array, was clear, and I had no complaints from anyone on the other end during my phone calls.

Connectivity is super versatile with Bluetooth 5.4 and wired connections via the auxiliary input. You can even connect with up to two devices simultaneously, which can be incredibly convenient for jumping between your laptop and phone. Controls are straightforward, with easy access to volume, play/stop, lighting, and ANC on the earcups. This is important to me, as the touch-based controls of modern ANC headphones is a challenge to master, in my opinion.

Battery life is another area where the Aventus truly shines, thanks to its 1000mAh battery. You’re looking at:

  • 82 hours with ANC off
  • 45 hours with ANC on
  • 18 hours with both ANC and RGB lighting enabled

And for those moments when you’re rushing out the door, fast charging gives you a solid 4 hours of playback from just 10 minutes of charging via USB-C. That’s plenty of zip for a quick commute or a few gaming rounds!

Who is This For?

The Kiwi Ears Aventus is a compelling option for its target audience of DJs and gamers, but frankly, it offers so much value that it could be a great fit for many other users too. While I do like them for myself, my son’s headphones recently broke so I gave them to him for a recent road trip, and he loved them!

Summary:

  • A comfortable over-ear headphone for long listening or gaming sessions
  • Flexible earcups that rotate and fold – a feature I absolutely love for both portability and single-ear use
  • Powerful, balanced sound with impressive bass and clarity, especially given the price
  • Effective hybrid ANC to cut down on ambient noise, whether you’re in a noisy gaming environment or just commuting
  • Seriously impressive battery life with versatile connectivity options (Bluetooth 5.4 and wired)
  • A budget-friendly price point that delivers features often found in more expensive headphones

The combination of good sound quality, effective ANC, incredible battery life, and thoughtful ergonomic design truly makes it stand out. While there are minor points about the plastic’s long-term feel and that slight bass rattle, these feel like small trade-offs for the overall value you’re getting. It delivers on its promises for its target audience and then some.
