Winter Soldier fans will like the character’s one-off from Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil/Kingpin/Elektra event. And anyone else who wants to check in on Bucky Barnes should be able to pick up Devil’s Reign: Winter Soldier #1. The story absolutely connects to the event, but the primary focus is how the developments related to New York are impacting Bucky’s life.

While Marvel fans may think of Wolverine first when they think of a character with a checkered past and memory loss, Barnes has the same issue — James Howlett just did it first. But while these two share this trait, there are even differences within this similarity. And Devil’s Reign: Winter Soldier #1 sets the stage to dig more into that very difference (though not in a comparative sense against Wolverine’s past).

But even with the focus shifted toward Winter Soldier, this issue adds to the Kingpin story that is Devil’s Reign. Readers get a sense of what the event’s central figure is dealing with internally.

And with Kingpin and Bucky battling internal problems, Nico Leon and Felipe Sobreiro make for a great art team. Devil’s Reign: Winter Soldier #1 feels like a dream sequence. It’s a bit trippy, which is fitting. This whole experience is very odd for the issue’s two main characters. It only makes sense that readers have a similar experience.
