The Miyoo Flip V2, particularly the Black Edition, positions itself as a notable contender in the portable retro gaming market, aiming to integrate nostalgic gameplay with contemporary handheld design principles. This device is designed for users who prioritize power, portability, and protection in a compact form factor for classic titles. There are not many clamshell options on the market, and here is Miyoo’s second model.
Design and Ergonomics
The Miyoo Flip V2 features a clamshell design with a sleek black finish, contributing to its premium aesthetic. Its construction incorporates aluminum alloy and ABS plastics, intended to provide durability against bending and scratches during daily use. A key design element is its clamshell top, which serves to protect the screen during transport and enhances its portability. The device weighs 170g, supporting its targeted purpose as a highly portable system. One that you can easily slip into your side pocket. The tight, wobble-free hinge locks into multiple positions, further reinforcing its durable construction. And when you do bust it out of your pocket, the buttons are noticeably quieter than other handhelds.
The handheld is equipped with a 3.5-inch Full IPS Screen, offering a resolution of 640×480 pixels. I find the display impressive, particularly at this price point of roughly $99. I never had to run the screen close to maximum brightness, either, which helps with overall battery life. More on that below. For audio output, the device includes high-fidelity speakers and a 3.5mm headphone port. I don’t have much commentary about the sound – it’s solid. The range is good and supports the games I like to play, such as those found on the Game Boy and SNES library.
Performance and Hardware
Underpinning the Miyoo Flip V2’s performance is a Rockchip RK3566 64-bit processor, featuring an RK3566 Cortex-A55 CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz. This is complemented by LPDDR4 1GB RAM and a G52 2EE GPU. This configuration provides the power you need to handle demanding emulators like PS1, Dreamcast, N64, and PSP with ease. N64 performance is hit or miss, due to proprietary Nintendo processing that I don’t understand well enough to explain in detail. The handheld supports many other emulators, such as Game Boy Advance, NES, Game Gear, Sega Genesis, PC Engine, and MAME.
Operating System and User Experience
The Miyoo Flip V2 operates on a Linux system, utilizing the Surwish OS as an optional pre-installed OS via LitNXT. This operating system is user-friendly and provides seamless navigation. Personally, I feel its a requirement for any clamshell handheld that closing the lid mid-game puts the device into a suspend state. Such as the quick resume functionality that Surwish enables. Additionally, the OS offers extensive customization options, including adjustments for brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, color saturation, screen illumination, and a selection of themes. More on this in the video below.
The inclusion of dual analog sticks is fantastic! It’s hard to believe handhelds like the PSP didn’t have them. And, of course, for those brutal older games like Ninja Gaiden, you have save states you can use to help you overcome challenging platforming sections and bosses.
Battery Life and Connectivity
The device is powered by a 3000mAh rechargeable battery, which is rated to provide 6–8 hours of gaming on a single charge. Keep in mind that the quick resume / sleep mode does still consume some battery. Connectivity options include 2.4/5G Wi-Fi for online gaming and Bluetooth for external controllers. Furthermore, HDMI connectivity allows the console to be connected to external displays such as TVs or monitors.
Storage and Preloaded Content
The Miyoo Flip V2 commonly comes with a 64GB TF card preloaded with hundreds of retro games. For systems featuring the Surwish OS, a 256GB storage option is also available. The device supports dual TF card slots and offers expansion capabilities up to 512GB, allowing users to expand their game library.
