The Monster Rancher franchise has been around for over two decades and like all good things, sometimes it’s nice to revisit the past. Trying to see if you can ignite the fire that burned inside you when you first experienced the series. KOEI Tecmo Games has just released a duel release of the first two original games, Monster Rancher 1 & 2.

In an age, before the continent broke apart, the world was in chaos and the people needed helped. It came in the form of monsters that were first a blessing but were themselves with problems. The God which called them into beings was exasperated by this and placed them into “disc stones”. They were sealed inside of them until rediscovered and used to compete in battles. You could train them, punish or praise them, feed them and make them better, stronger, faster.

Delving into the two titles was definitely a walk into the past. They were both originally released here in the States for the Playstation so the graphics match that of the time period. The gameplay was to be expected with the style of the games and there was mild amounts of functionality added for the Steam release. Playing on the keyboard and mouse was good, combat with those wasn’t as pleasing so I automated combat with my monsters. Both games played well while keeping the nostalgia and allowing some minor additions like the music library to pick your monsters and online combat. Overall, it was a good title for those wanting to revisit this classic pair of titles.
