UnSpottable
Published by: GrosChevaux
Developed by: GrosChevaux
Released on: January 21, 2021
Of the games of 2021 that I’ve spent the most time playing, Unspottable is right up there. As I mentioned in our GWW Gift Guide, there are hours of hilarious local multiplayer moments. The game happens both onscreen and in your head, as you try to disguise your movements as a robot. Shouts and laughs were present during every match. And for around $10, it is an easy recommendation for a social party game.

Tunche
Published by: HypeTrain Digital
Developed by: LEAP Game Studios
Released on: November 2, 2021
As mentioned in my review, “Tunche motivated me to come back run after run. LEAP Game Studios constructed a deep rogue-like that plays out as one modernization of classic arcade brawlers. Tunche successfully combines genres to create a charming and challenging game that rewards a player’s skill and time.” What makes it one of my favorite games of 2021 is the solid beat’em up brawler action merged with the longterm play of a rogue-like, wrapped in the aesthetic of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Published by: Square Enix
Developed by: Eidos-Montreal
Released on: October 26, 2021
Casey’s review sums it up well, “Guardians of the Galaxy is a comic book video game that will reach the top of your lists, it isn’t perfect, but it certainly knew the assignment and succeeded beyond most of our expectations.” As a Marvel fan disappointed by Marvel’s Avengers last year, I was hesitant about this game. But from the opening mission on, I was wrapped up in the world Eidos-Montreal created. It’s been a long time since I laughed out loud with a game and cared about the characters at the same time. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of my games of 2021.

Undunegon
Published by: TinyBuild
Developed by: Laughing Machines
Released on: November 18, 2021
This game surprised me and became one of my games of 2021. The narrative and world-building drew me in. The combat kept me on the edge of my chair trying to stay alive. As I said in my review for Undunegon, “Undungeon’s rich world and challenging combat evolved my experience from a straightforward action RPG into a deeply satisfying narrative and mechanics heavy computer RPG. Players may get the urge to bounce off and not invest the time that Undungeon demands. But for those that do, Undungeon has a unique and compelling story to tell woven between white-knuckled combat.”
