R-Rated ‘Hellboy’ Reboot Coming; Neil Marshall and David Harbour In Talks

May 9, 2017

It looks like we now know why Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman couldn’t convince Hellboy creator Mike Mignola to make a third film. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Mike is working on a deal with Dark Horse Entertainment and Millennium Films for a new R-rated reboot of the franchise.

The film’s working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. Its script was penned by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Mignola. The villain, of course, would be the Nimue aka The Lady of The Lake. A British witch from the era of King Arthur.

Film and television director Neil Marshall (The Descent) and Stranger Things actor David Harbour are in talks for the film. Marshall is best known for directing the massive action heavy episodes of Game of Thrones while Harbour was recently linked to the Cable role in Deadpool 2.

A demon, raised by a professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

UPDATE: David Harbour confirmed the news with this Tweet.

We can see where Mike is coming from as the comics had a more horror element to it, which didn’t always fit with the two PG-13 films from del Toro. It’ll be interesting to see if this might open the door for a Mignola/Dark Horse Cinematic Universe.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that they attempt to hire Eva Green or Lena Heady for Nimue.

Millennium tends to work with Lionsgate/Summit, so there’s a possibility that the distribution will be handled by them.
