‘Rogue One/Solo’ Production Designer Neal Lamont Suggesting ‘Kenobi’ Was Indeed In Development?

Aug 16, 2018

We’ve been reporting for years that Lucasfilm is expected to make an Obi Wan Kenobi spin-off their next Star Wars story. THR breaking that Stephen Daldry was being eyed to direct.

Well, some new intel from the people who actually make these movies could be hinting they were indeed work on it behind the scenes.

A tidbit shared by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story production designer Neal Lamont to CinemaBlend, might suggest that they were indeed working on another spin-off recently and it would have had been set on Tatooine.

”We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies. So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.”

This does sounds like Neal is talking about Kenobi: A Star Wars Story, as James Mangold’s Boba Fett movie was never ready to go. As we reported Mangold was prepping Ford vs Ferrari as his next movie when he was revealed to be attached for Fett.

Interesting enough, while Ewan McGregor has been downplaying a return to the Kenobi role while on the Christopher Robin press tour. He will be finished with Doctor Sleep in December, giving him plenty of training time if Kenobi does end up filming in April or the summer.

It’s very unlikely that Lucasfilm will be skipping a release date in 2020, as Bob Iger had revealed a while back that a spin-off would take the 2020 release spot and they have yet to announce what the next release would be.

Stephen Daldry was said to be out of the mix as director as far back as last year and there is now conflicting information concerning the current status of the project.
